Rebecca's Birth Story

Rebecca Paige Smith We really struggled with agreeing on a name again. We each had several we liked, but only a few were mutual: Katelyn, Hailey, Jacey (only if middle name was Elizabeth) & then Rebecca. I hadn't considered many classic names, this one being very common in the 90s, but when I heard the name at the temple, it felt right. I went there with two questions in mind, and felt that one had been answered. We are studying the Old Testament in Sunday School. I came home and told Mr Smith and he just said "I'll call her Becca". He then told me Lexi had told him the name Paige that same day, and I said the two sounded perfect together. Details 7lbs 13oz 20 inches long 14 in head lots dark brown hair light eye lashes Birth Story Friday, 4/20 elective induction (4/22 due date) - I had GroupB strep for the first time. I had not planned an induction until this added stress, which meant I needed 4 hours on antibiotics before delivery. I was worri...

It's a Girl! April 22!

It was definitely a great visit when we got to see this wiggly little baby & find out Lexi is going to have a SISTER! Mr Smith was wishing for a boy mostly because Lexi & I were really hoping for a GIRL! I'm so excited to go back through all the little girl things again; I was not ready to go back through little boy stuff so quickly. Dallin will do well to be smooshed between all this estrogen. They also confirmed that I was measuring 2 weeks behind when based off the last period date, but since I told them I'm not average & that I KNEW I was two weeks later, then all is well. April 22 is the due date for this bundle of joy! In all honestly, April is a really great month to have a baby even if the girls hate sharing it later on. And our deductible resets April 1st so I'm glad it's after that! Outside of some mental exhaustion, indigestion, weight gain in the booty (I'm already 15lbs heavier, yikes!), gas, some acne & typical aches & pains, a...

Not the Best 1st Doc Apt

I have the worst memory, otherwise you'd think I'd know my baby stuff by now. I know to ask more questions than just assume stranger doc knows best, but two kids and no Mr Smith easily has me flustered. It was supposed to be a quick first apt. Just tell me there is a heartbeat. It's the best part, right? Well, I didn't expect to have to deal with a cervix / internal uterus check with two kids today. It completely flustered me more as she walked out of the room matter of factly. Why didn't I just say no, I don't think that's necessary? Because I didn't want to tick a doctor off today? She already ticked me off when she wouldn't believe me when I said I was 12 weeks pregnant, not 14 weeks. I tried explaining that my periods were 40 days apart and I actually tracked this one, "we'll see" at the 20 week apt, but what I should have said was "you mean 18 weeks?". I'm ready to switch offices, at least physicians. The other d...

Another Pumpkin Coming Our Way!

Another pumpkin joining this crazy patch in 6 months! Another April baby! (and I hope it's another girl too; only Dad wants the boy). I feel a little overwhelmed already, but it's always exciting to picture snuggling a baby. I just pray this one is either chill or at least likes sleep!  I feel like this has been my best 1st trimester. Although I've felt nauseous & exhausted, the straight nausea only lasted a few weeks and then I'd just get highs & lows. I only threw up some cheese grits. And I think Mr Smith has cleaned more pots these last few weeks than the last 6 years combined... Now, the nausea is basically gone. I just have some food aversions to the smell of peanut butter & Little Caesars pizza. I haven't done much these last 6 weeks outside of move (we found out we were pregnant the weekend before). Hopefully we'll start to get out a little more now! We started enjoying some October festivities at Farmfest, a nearby pumpkin patc...

Croup

I wonder when I'll forget that morning of hearing Dallin crying mid-sleep and realizing I could go to him but it was only 12 AM and it felt like we had just laid him down. While I waited for what seemed like forever on Mr Smith to make the initial leap, my body decided to get up before my mind even caught up. AS SOON as I opened the door and realized what he sounded like, I grabbed him and I told Mr Smith to get up; Dallin needed to go to the hospital. Mr Smith hadn't been sleeping. I slipped on slippers and I wanted to cry while I held Dallin close to me as Mr Smith changed and got Lexi up. It was more than just his inability to breathe, every breath sounded like his last. Inhale and exhale, that wheeze was so labored and so heartbreaking that I immediately thought about his baby cousins who were in our home the previous day. Oh my gosh, what if we passed this to them! We didn't even strap him in the car seat really. We didn't want anything restricting him. It was the...

Being A Parent

There was a time when Dallin was sleeping better (maybe only waking up once or so) and we weren't being disturbed by Lexi at night either and during the day Lexi was being so much nicer to Dallin and being a big helper and LISTENING. It lasted for a couple of days. I was in the clouds. It's funny how you think "maybe I got this" and then your children slap you in the face. Turns out, I'm still impatient and have a temper. All it takes is for Lexi to ruin another chapstick of mine after I have told her 100 billion times not to touch MY diaper bag or MY bedside table. Sometimes I can let things go, but wastefulness... it slays me. There was also that time when I told her not to press any other buttons on the Kindle (before I knew about parental controls) and she bought $22 worth of Sid the Science Kid or she almost did . I freaked out before I knew the facts. I ran in and took it away (they sent me an email) so SHE FREAKED and boy were we a hot mess. I had ...

Who Wore It Better?

Haha, okay, some days I look at pictures and see it, but this time it's a stretch. Just trying to extend the lifetime of Lisa's onesie. And that pacifier clip... I even threw in the same soccer ball, but Dallin kicked it out in this photo which was the only non-blurry one. And that's life folks. <4 month babies in 9 month onesies>

Fan Club

I think I might have a slight love affair with this little guy. He is just so chill! I know the 3 month growth spurt made Alexis hard to handle, so I'm sure the time is only coming where I can't say that, but I have a feeling he is going to be a great little kid. If he slept the 3-4 hour stretches at night consistently, I'd have to say he was perfect. I'm honestly grateful he doesn't need a pacifier while he sleeps. It still lulls him to sleep but he always spits it out once he hits snooze. If I try to put it in when he wakes though, no lulling. He just wants to be nursed. He does this head banging thing on my chest. Which sometimes means he needs to burp as well. But really it's just a guess. His nose could itch for all I know. And he also starting biting on his hands a lot. Another hunger cue I suppose. I coughed it up to teething when Lexi started that. My favorite things are still when he holds onto my shirt or scratches my back when nursing. I...

Passing Down the Cuteness

Dallin wearing  Mr Smith's baby blessing outfit at 2 months. I love those bottoms. And that face of course. Sometimes he smacks his lips when he sees me. I try not to take it personally.

7 week Check-In

I have to finally say at 7 weeks Mr Dallin FINALLY gave us a 4 hours stretch. The first time we got 4/2/3 during the night. The following day he did 3.5/2.5/2/2 which I'll take as well. It's amazing how I still feel tired BUT I have more energy to get things done during the day knowing I won't get a nap. So thank you son, thank you. Way to set the bar so low. He still has a little wheeze on exhale when he sleeps and sometimes during the day his feeds are just super wheezy and he chokes so I'm not sure if the reflux has inflamed passages that make it difficult to breathe or what, but something is up. However, the last few nights, his feeds are good (including the cluster feeds before bed) I have him swaddled on his side in the cradle in our bed and it seems to be the best combo! The standard has been set so I only expect to go up from here... So hard not to set myself up for disappointment.  I also think it's important that his last nap prior to bedtime is ...

One Of Us Is Sleeping

We won't know what it's like to feel well rested for awhile, but baby D will. And luckily, Lexi has been better at staying in her room and sleeping past 8AM. Baby D still likes to eat though and I haven't gotten past the 2 hour mark at night yet. I guess he can be loud when he sleeps too (just like Lexi); I can sleep through the non-cries, but Mr Smith moved to the couch. I really wish we had a guest bed or at least a longer couch. I wanted to do a basic comparison between Dallin & Lexi (which I'll have to add to once I remember things). Like… Differences: w/Lexi, I had swollen feet/ankles, cried a lot over nursing, clogged tear duct, cradle cap w/Dallin, I had indigestion, mastitis infections, choking until blue, failed glucose testing, light eyelashes & little hair on top Similarities: gained same amount of weight, similar birth weight, loud sleepers, shallow breathers, came out nursing every 1-2 hours, great in the car seat & body car...

Dallin's Birth Story

Labor Timeline Tuesday, March 8th Elective Induction, 1 day after my due date Don't I look insanely giddy with my makeup all done and hair straightened? It all goes to pots in 7 hours. I mean I guess I'm still giddy. 6:30 Hospital check-in, 2.5 cm 70%, no contractions 8:30 Petocin 10:30 Doc broke my water, 3 cm 80%, -2 position Hunger pains more than anything up to this point. Eric got breakfast served 11:00 Reached highest dose of petocin 11:15 Pain reaches around the back, fluid still leaking, contractions 2-3 minutes apart peaking for 10-15 seconds, finally feeling difficult contractions but manageable 11:30 Flavored ice chips are awesome. Watching HGTV, contraction patterns good, just waiting for them to get strong and open the cervix. 12:00 4.5 cm, head lower, more fluid leakings 12:15 Ordered epideral even though contractions still manageable 1:00 Epideral, 5 cm, the needle was more painful than expected, legs & bum p...

Only For Those Who Care About Diapers and Cost

Okay, you guys are going to think I'm crazy, but sometimes I just get obsessed with things and then I have to lay it out in an Excel spreadsheet to make sense of my mind-erings. With Cyber Monday and Target $20 gift cards, I get a little excited. If you haven't heard from me yet, I LOVE the gift cards Targets offers on their diapers. I also have a bunch of random brands for Size 1 (currently Pampers Dry, New Generation from Amazon, Walgreens, Target), but after that - I'm Target loyal because it's the easiest way to get them cheap HOWEVER I didn't always get the deals with Lexi because I bought as needed and hoped when I needed they were on sale! So this time around, while the deals fell in the same few weeks, I thought why not stock up and not stress about making sure things are in stock when I need them, because it's UT and diaper deals go fast! Mr Smith and I also like to calculate how much we spend overall on things like this. Quicken tells him what he nee...

20-22 Weeks in One Photo

Technically it's 22 weeks although let's pretend it's my 20 week photo, cause 22 weeks is a little random and I matched the outfit to my first 20 week photo. December 4 2012 vs November 4 2015 Fairly close (although I tried a slight slimming angle that first time around didn't I…)? Probably bigger the second time at least in the legs… because I definitely will not be wearing those pants again. I really hope that all my maternity that I still kept wearing over the last 2 years shrank some because it's a little disturbing how much tighter and shorter things are this time around, lesson learned . However, these days, 2 weeks does make a difference AND I LOVE ALL FOOD. And I love my doctor since they don't even mention my weight, unlike the last one . . . I still think I feel little baby every time he is awake since they sleep a lot and I feel him a lot, but again he probably hates all the tight clothes too. Dad's definitely felt him; we...

Move Baby Move

More than just a flutter or maybe just a flutter , but either way it's such a fun feeling! To know they're alive and kicking! I don't know if I've been paying enough attention until recently or if the babe is just finally big enough for me to notice that it's something more than gas bubbles.  It has been really hard for me to accept that I'm pregnant this time around and I don't know why! Because it's not like I haven't wanted to be. Maybe I'm still in shock that I'm almost half way there to adding another human monkey to my life! Pregnancy, delivery, newborn, toddlerhood . . . the phases that last forever, yet leave in a flash once they come. It's getting more real now that I can't hide the belly and now that I feel him (heard him again at my 16 week apt). I see other people that are ahead of me with multiple kids and I just stop and realize we're on the timeframe perfect for our family.  We talk to Lexi almost every evening...

Half Mental

I have all these amazing friends and Pinterest pictures telling me how easy it is to eat vegetables, but I let myself get to the brink of starvation and eat an oatmeal creme pie to tie me over until the macncheese is done. A problem? Yes, mom I need you pronto. But ugh everything else just sounds awful right now (if I have to make it). I really want someone to make me a chicken pot pie. It's got veggies in there. Top symptoms: fatigue, increased appetite yet a hate/love relationship with food, a billion bathroom breaks, heavy stomach, stuffy/dry nose causing morning gag reflexes and lack of needed oxygen, and then there is acne which hasn't been a problem since I was nursing Lexi. At least the indigestion has died down some. And I'm all talk about how different it seems this time around, but then I read this post when I was 12 weeks with Lexi and I'm all = nothing has changed, I'm so glad I blogged. I was much more entertaining back then.  My husband alwa...

My Medical Story

I made it to 13 weeks and still don't have a belly photo. I'm not the one who married a photographer. But that means I'm over the first trimester hump! I'm still in the crawling around, can't handle activities that last longer than an hour, funk. I might have felt the baby? But I mean my intestines also move around like crazy. So we're also still in the it's-not-really-real part of pregnancy although there was that heartbeat! I've been most nervous my pregnancy because I feel like my body has been out of whack and I worry it will have consequences on the baby. I was told thyroid issues can prevent you getting pregnant in the first place, but it's also a little risky once pregnant when my levels aren't in a normal range. What's weird is that my T4 hormone levels are normal, so I'm not so sure why TSH levels are off the chart.  I first went in end of last year to get some routine blood work to check my hormone levels after the ear...

1st Trimester

*4 weeks ago* I'm staying quite for several reasons. 1. I'm scared every day I will lose the baby so getting my hopes too high makes me anxious. 2. I'm working still and trying to stay calm with how all the logistics are going to work out {I didn't expect to be in this position again}. 3. Sometimes it's fun to keep the secret - to just smile to yourself without having to share something so personal, which is all it is at this point.  I don't like being pregnant. I won't ever understand those who do. People can relate to being sick and getting to that low point where you think you have no idea what it's like to feel normal anymore - to lose hope in the idea that you will ever see what normal is again. I whine and I don't keep my feelings from Mr Smith. I'm selfish and want him to know exactly what I'm going through so that we can go through it together. I tell a few other close friends and family members just so he isn't my only sou...

Another Heartbeat

We just wanted to let you know that if all goes well, we will have another Smith baby coming March 2016.  It'll be fun to announce more details as we get closer to 20 weeks. But for now, we're grateful and humbled by a little heartbeat at 12 weeks. Lexi will be the best.sister.ever.  I don't want the world to know yet. I probably won't make it a big deal until we know the gender. So I wanted this blog private until then.
